Caught in the Act: Salmon Arm RCMP Reports on February Incidents

FRAUD
On February 7, a woman reported someone attempted to defraud her out of $6500. The woman received a phone call from a man saying her grandson was in jail and needed bail money. The woman provided the man her home address, went to her local bank and withdrew $6500 then returned home. A woman in civilian clothing attended the victim’s home, however the victim began to realize it was a possible scam when the fraudster refused to provide her license plate and had parked down the road so the victim couldn’t see what type of vehicle she was driving. The victim did not provide any cash, and the fraudster left. Police attempted to identify the fraudster and canvassed the neighbourhood for witnesses and video but there was no further information. Calls to the phone number that called the victim went unanswered.
Bail money is not collected at residential homes, especially not by people who refuse to identify themselves. Police do not recommend giving out your address to anyone requesting large sums of money from you over the phone.
PROHIBITED DRIVING
On February 8, 2024 at 3:30 pm, Salmon Arm RCMP observed a known male that was prohibited from driving, sitting in the driver’s seat of a black Dodge pickup. The pickup appeared to be attempting to evade police but was eventually safely stopped by police. The driver was arrested for driving while prohibited and served a future court date to speak to the allegations. The vehicle was also impounded for a mandatory minimum 7 days.
THEFT
On February 9 at 11:30 am, a staff member reported a theft of liquor from a local liquor store. A manhad entered the store and concealed a bottle of alcohol inside his jacket. The man then grabbed a bottleof wine and went to pay but told the cashier he left his payment card in his vehicle. The man left thebottle of wine but did not pay for the concealed bottle of alcohol in his jacket. Police viewed surveillancefootage and were able to identify a suspect. The matter is still under investigation.
BREAK AND ENTER
On February 9 at 2pm, an 18-year-old man reported that his ex-girlfriend had broken into his residence, no damage, returned some clothing, and left some notes and a promise ring. Police attended and the man showed police his bedroom. The notes and promise ring appeared to be setup in a display. Police were unable to contact the ex-girlfriend. The matter is under further investigation.
IMPAIRED DRIVING
On February 11 at 10pm, police observed a black Saturn SUV. Police queried the licence plate which showed the registered owner was un-licenced. Police conducted a traffic stop and detected an odour ofalcohol from the female driver’s breath. Police conducted a breath demand and obtained two readings of “warn” readings. The woman was issued a 7-day driving prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded. The matter was referred to RoadSafetyBC.
