Five Candidates in Salmon Arm - Shuswap Riding

By Jo Anne Malpass

With the BC provincial election set for October 19, our riding of Salmon Arm-Shuswap has five declared candidates, Sylvia Lindgren for the BC NDP Party, Greg McCune as an independent, Sherry Roy as independent, Jed Wiebe for BC Green Party and David Williams, Conservative Party of BC.

Sylvia Lindgren, BC NDP - Twice-elected to Salmon Arm municipal council, Sylvia Lindgren has a record of taking action on the issues that matter to the people in her community. Having lived in Salmon Arm for over 30 years, and raised three kids in the local community, she is ready to take on the big challenges facing families today, says a BC NDP Release.

“People across Salmon Arm-Shuswap need a government that will take action to strengthen public services and tackle today’s big challenges head-on,” said Lindgren. “The David Eby I know is on the side of regular people and fights to help them get ahead. John Rustad has a 20-year record of cuts and higher costs – he’s a risk we cannot afford. I’m ready to work every day so that the people of Salmon Arm-Shuswap can build good lives in the community they love.”

Greg McCune, Independent - “Like the majority of the population in the riding of Salmon Arm – Shuswap my personal politics are centre-right,” said his release. Greg was the local candidate for BC United before the party’s campaign was suspended.

He has 25 years of experience as mayor and city councillor in Enderby. “After a lifetime of owning and operating a small business I know the struggles the business community faces under the David Eby government. I cannot sit by and be silent.

I am committed to focusing on: Affordability, Health Care, Mental Health & Addiction, Homelessness, Agricultural Rights, Small Business, Fiscal Responsibility and What Matters to YOU.”

“I want people to remember I didn’t choose this … but when I win this riding, Independent MLAs like myself could be positioned as provincial powerbrokers to hold government accountable to start focusing on the issues that matter.”

Sherry Roy – Independent - Sherry Roy has lived in the North Okanagan-Shuswap area for 40+ years and has always been an active member of the community. Her background is in social work, family court, and family counselling. Sherry was a registered mediator and is now a Certified Holistic Health Coach. She is a boots on the ground advocate for the rights of local citizens, says her Facebook page.

Sherry has always been a connector and collaborator, holding several large community events at her home where hundreds have gathered. Most recently, Sherry coordinated 5 BC Townhalls, where community members discussed issues and solutions to get BC back on a better track.

Jed Wiebe BC Green Party - Jed is a lifelong resident of the Shuswap, where he co-owns / operates an organic elderberry farm and small-scale processing business. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology from the University of Dalhousie. As a university student, he spent his summers in the silviculture industry, gaining first-hand knowledge of humans’ destructive effects on the planet. This sparked his resolve to develop strong environmental principles to live by, says his website.

Jed sees issues in our society, ranging from poverty, racism, and climate change, are all connected. He is committed to bringing a holistic and intersectional approach to the forefront of our political discourse in BC. He is certain that together we will create a future that is not only sustainable but also just and inclusive for all.

David Williams, Conservative Party of BC – With a strong work ethic, David has a diverse and rich professional history. He began his career in the HVAC industry, later shifting to the fields of residential and commercial real estate and roles with B.C. Assessment Authority. Currently, he serves as a Loss Control Specialist/Residential Appraiser in the local insurance industry, which gives him unique insights into the community’s needs, says his website.

David advocates for common-sense policies that resonate with the core values of British Columbians, including government transparency, fair taxation, reduced wasteful spending, easing burdens on businesses, and justice reform. David believes in the importance of action and foresight, striving for policies that promote a positive future for all.
